Getting books ready for your e-reader
#1
When you get a book, many times they are not readable out of the box for your e-book reader, and they need to be modified.

Paper
If the book is a paper one, you need to scan it. If it's plain text, black and white with 300 dpi is the way to go. You get a jpg or tiff like this:

PDF scans
Sometimes you download pdf files that can't be read in a e-reader, mostly because the scans are two pages per image, like the previous case.
First we need to split the pdf into single jpgs. We can do this with the chrome application "PDF to image". This is a free aplication for that browser. You drag the pdf to the application, upload it, select the split full pages option, and download the zip file with the jpgs of the pages.

In both cases we have jpg (or tiff) with two pages per image. Now we use scan tailor.

Scan tailor
The program is self-explanatory.
An important part is the side margins in the page layout part of the process. The final result, a pdf, won't have the capability of changing the font size, so in order to maximize the font size the side margins need to be as small as posible. You do this by adjusting the "hard margins" as close to the text as posible.
The "soft margins" need to be small as well, just 1 mm for example.

Scan tailor produces tiff images, one per page. Now we merge all of them to a single djvu file with DjVu Solo 3.1

DjVu Solo 3.1

We open the first image:
Show Content

Now we go to:  edit -> Append Pages
And select from the second to the last one
Now file -> Save as -> bundled -> save ( 300 scanned)
Now we have a djvu file with the whole book.

Kindle can't read djvu files, so now we convert djvu to pdf with DjVuLibre
You just open the djvu and export it as a pdf file.

If you want to convert e-books between different formats, you can use calibre.
For example, from epub to mobi:
You go to Add book -> Convert
And select Output format: MOBI
Show Content
Output profile: Kindle
Show Content
And OK.
