Just recently, I found, that after twelve years of owning a modded Playstation 2, the system can only play Ridata-burnt games. A few months ago, it can play retail games, but just now, it won't even read the retail games.
I bought retail games second hand. Luckily (or not), i downloaded ISOs of those games and can play the burnt versions on my PS2.
It would register the stamped copies as "unreadable," but the burnt copies work just fine.
Can it be that the retail versions are scratched beyond belief, or is it that the PS2 is acting up? (And remember, it's the burnt copies that can be read.)

Try to make iso with very low speed of retail games with ImgBurn and burn it, and check.
Before make iso, use option Test Mode and Verify(fake iso creation). Make sure the disks are cleared with alcohol.
Try to compare your iso and iso you downloaded for sizes.

Progress Report
If I did what you told me to do, Imgburn balked out and told me that there are bad sectors on the retail game.
The tested game was Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 by the way.

..or disks are bad, or pirated chip in playstation is gone ..haha.
In ImgBurn enter Tools, Settings,..then Read tab and "Ignore read errors", and make iso.(or try other iso maker)
..then test with this:
https://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/ps2/
..test also with downloaded iso for fun.

Well, I can still play pirated games on the PS2.
There are two retail games I can still play: WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2006 and WWE Smackdown vs Raw.

if after use of professional software you got error, than disk is done.
...use Alcohol 120%
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_120%25
It can create images of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 file systems.

I did that, and - it works!
But when I try the original disc after burning a copy, that one doesn't!
What is the problem?

Thanks, but that wasn't my problem.
My slim, hard-modded PS2 is playing the burnt games, but not three of my other purchased, second-hand PS2 DVD games, namely Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth, Smackdown vs. Raw 2007, and Smackdown 2010.
They have scratches, but just a few months ago, they worked pretty well.
And with the WWE SVR 2007, the backup created from the original disc using Alcohol 120% worked fine as well.
So, it's doing the opposite of what I expect all PS2s, even modded ones.
Thanks for the answers though.
