How can I know which updates are safe to use ?
I attached instructions from the torrent. It makes mention of updates but wasn't specific about what updates could cause problems. I did search for this information, only finding stuff relating to win 7, how pirating software is wrong or how updating will F my os.
Short answer, yes. Longer answer, Windows 8 is different to 7 so looking at issues relating to 7 is not going to help with 8 mainly because the activation of 8 cant be done with a loader so when 8 is activated it is activated by Microsoft so its genuine even if its pirated.
Till today's date there is no stable activator for Windows 8 you will have to wait for some time till it is released.
Windows 7 has a perfect activator which fetches automatic updates, I personally backed out from Windows 8 to Windows 7 for the updates reason only.
If you still want to be with Windows 8 and get automatic updates then just do not download the security updates from microsoft, you may download the other updates.

That's really bad advice, the point of updates is to fix security issues surely but nevertheless a non activated Windows 8 is almost fully functional and an activated one thats activated through key or phone or kms is genuine and will remain genuine.

@Kingfish you are right but "murphy" had said me once to not download the security updates. The question what "btrs" is having now was the same question from me to murphy, based on murphy's answer now Im advising btrs.
I see I think & thank you, so in time when a stable version is released updates will be safe. Would using updates and keeping a regular back up with Norton ghost prevent me from having to re install my OS should an update cause problems?

Its not that there is no 'stable' activator for Windows 8 its there isn't an activator at all because Windows 8 uses a new OEM mechanism so the choices for activation are kms/mak or phone activation and whatever method you use Microsoft will have made the system genuine so no hacking was involved so updates are extremely unlikely to revert the system back to non activated but even if it did its no big deal as non activated is a very small watermark on the desktop and you cant change a few background colors.
