I'm just a user, but guess some may also like to know there're people trying different things.
Future is always uncertain and, who knows, you may have just started the next big thing?
Stay safe Wink

PS: I rather have Python or other language if not a standalone exe. I just don't like Java myself.

I'm totally with you on that one. Learned that the hard way. Java is a huge pain to me right now. 1st thing in the list right now is to migrate from Java.

This thread is about Magnetico.  If you are not posting about the service described in the first post, you are posting in the wrong thread.  Continued off-topic posting is at your own risk.

I've seen solutions like this and even recommended it to KAT staff before they were taken down.

There was a discussion about it but don't remember why they didn't want it, I could guess it was one of the below reasons:

1. No trust in third party software
2. Not compatible with major ad platforms
3. Requirement to use additional software / not available directly through web browser

On second thought, in light of recent events: Can't make it?

(1) This one is bad, but can be also explored as a venue, provided someone can code and someone else can cover.
(2) May be also an opportunity: A new market niche to explore; and on the advertising field, this mean lotta doughnuts.
(3) Can't be done with plug-ins? Android trends are making users more open to mixed solutions. Add incentive, maybe?

As old men say, seize the moment, the field, the rights, the peoples and the rules; own all! Push fear into victory and make pain become glory!

Is anyone running magnetico? Besides the dev being quiet lately (since 2015?), I'm trying it.

Installed it on Ubunto 14 on VmWare / Windows 7.

MagneticoD works and quickly starts to pull torrents from the DHT, but the web interface magneticoW doesn't.

I'll try again with another distro, Ubunto has the wrong Python version for magnetico. Anyway, I wanted to know if someone still use it.

I tested it a few days ago. I experienced quite slow loading of torrents from DHT using magneticoD (would say it might have been less than 1 torrent per minute or maybe slower, not sure exactly now). About magneticoW, it did not display any torrents at first as well. But it did display them after I restarted my machine (i think there is sth about it on github.. that you should restart magneticoD, or magneticoW or something). I guess it is something like magneticoD harvests them and magneticoW displays them the next session. I think I had problems with search utility, iirc it did not display any results even when it should have.
I will have a look at it some more as it seems very interesting (though it has some problems already mentioned, e.g. lack of moderators and trust), hope we can stir a debate on it Smile

Me too. It's an elegant, simple solution; instead of creating a new system or just trying to anonymize the current torrent system, the guy just decentralized it.
Of course there're issues to solve and privacy protection (maybe Tor or I2P) should be added / used in tandem.

Published code should make things easier, but I'm not a developer nor know protocols, will take years to understand it.

Just curious, how would it be monitored for viruses, fakes, or bad files? There would be no way for us to communicate with each other. Am I correct? If not help me out here.

You are correct. The problem with any fully decentralized solution is that it will be riddled with fakes and infected content.

"Add decentralized modding" is the "obvious" solution but in terms of difficulty that ranks right up there with "invent teleportation device".

There is no reason to expect it will happen any time soon.

Has been discussed. This one system is a prototype and lacks any "amenities", but -in theory- they can be added and work properly.

Sid is in doubt about the feasibility of such an open system; I understand his reasons.
I think it is like democracy: Nobody so far manage to put order to it, neither wanted to.

Either it can be a
- centralized moderation of the decentralized network, like central comitees run the web, osf, etc
or a
- ranking system, where people lie, cheat, do weird stuff... Do we want to make a perfect system? What's better than emulating society as it really is?

What I doubt is someone will make it happen, project is stalled for some time.
Also, nowadays most apps are advertized¹, tivoized, monetized, socialized, etc too much.
They say Edison prototyped the lamp in a few days, but took him months to tune it to burn-out not so fast neither last too long...

(¹) Sorry. Other errors were unintentional and evaded revision.
