Russia has become the most sanctioned country in the world as a result of its war in Ukraine, according to a New York-based sanctions watchlist site.
The US and its allies imposed sanctions on Russia for the first time on February 22, a day after President Vladimir Putin declared the two Ukrainian rebel territories of Donetsk and Luhansk to be "independent states," according to sources.
Hundreds of more sanctions were imposed after Russia declared its military actions against Russia on February 24.
2,754 sanctions on Russia were already in place before February 22 and 2,778 more were applied in the days following the assault, bringing the total to 5,532, according to the website.
Russia’s number now outranks Iran's 3,616 sanctions, removing Tehran from first place, according to the BBC citing Castellum.AI as saying.
Switzerland (568), the European Union (518), Canada (454), Australia (413), the United States (243), the United Kingdom (35), and Japan (35) are among the nations and areas sanctioning Russia, according to the site.
