Following three acclaimed and stylistically distinct full-length albums in 2019, Surrender Your Poppy Field, is a head-spinning tour de force. And hands down the most adventurous GBV album ever. There are lo-fi four-track tape recordings, there are songs recorded with a single microphone in a basement, there are big studio fully-produced hook-laden pop songs, and there is a lot in between. It's an exhilarating and dizzying trip to an inventive world of strange characters.

Everything changed for The Beths when they released their debut album, Future Me Hates Me, in 2018. The indie rock band had long been nurtured within Auckland, New Zealand’s tight-knit music scene, working full-time during the day and playing music with friends after hours. Full of uptempo pop rock songs with bright, indelible hooks, the LP garnered them critical acclaim from outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, and they set out for their first string of shows overseas. They quit their jobs, said goodbye to their hometown, and devoted themselves entirely to performing across North America and Europe. They found themselves playing to crowds of devoted fans and opening for acts like Pixies and Death Cab for Cutie. Almost instantly, The Beths turned from a passion project into a full-time career in music.

Songwriter and lead vocalist Elizabeth Stokes worked on what would become The Beths’ second LP, Jump Rope Gazers, in between these intense periods of touring. Like the group’s earlier music, the album tackles themes of anxiety and self-doubt with effervescent power pop choruses and rousing backup vocals, zeroing in on the communality and catharsis that can come from sharing stressful situations with some of your best friends. Stokes’s writing on Jump Rope Gazers grapples with the uneasy proposition of leaving everything and everyone you know behind on another continent, chasing your dreams while struggling to stay close with loved ones back home.

Criteria is an indie rock band from Omaha, Nebraska, formed in 2003 when ex-Cursive founding member Steve Pedersen returned to his hometown after graduating from the Duke University School of Law. He spent six months in a friend's basement where he wrote all ten songs for his new project's debut album. He recruited the help of some old friends, A.J. Mogis (of Presto! Recording Studios and Lullaby for the Working Class) on bass guitar, Aaron Druery on guitar, and Mike Sweeney of Beep Beep on drums. Their first album, En Garde, was released on his previous band's label, Initial Records. Steve Pedersen eventually got a day job as a lawyer, making it hard for the band to go on tour to promote their new album. Initial Records went bankrupt about a year after, leaving Criteria without a label. Saddle Creek Records took their longtime friend in and put out three releases in 2005. The first was a re-release of the overlooked and underrated En Garde, their new single, "Prevent the World," and their second full-length, When We Break. After being moved into Saddle Creek, Pedersen quit his day job to spend full time making music and touring. Their latest album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Criteria's own A.J. Mogis (whose work you also know from Cursive, Monsters of Folk, and more), and Criteria say it's actually been in the making for years (hence the title).

Chicago has unearthed some monumental bands over the years. Within the windy city, there was a resurgence of acts which altered the landscape of modern punk rock. These outfits include Rise Against and dark princes of punk Alkaline Trio. Both of these music stalwarts have popularised punk in a way where it is more accessible and relevant. Also under that umbrella, are The Lawrence Arms - pushing punk in different, conceptual directions, spearheading small revolutions in a scene covered in blood, sweat and tears. As the follow up to 2014’s “Metropole”, Skeleton Coast showcases the bands continued growth over the past six years between while still staying true to the sound which has endeared them to fans since the late 90’s. It is one of the most comprehensive pieces of work by the Chicago punks. It’s sad, it’s raucous and it’s painfully true.

Bush - The Kingdom (2020) [FLAC]

[Image: 0e70d9c2318b3d73a155d07147a89e0f98430718.jpg]

Released ................ 2020
Source .................. WEB
Genre ................... rock, alternative
Codec ................... FLAC
Bit Depth ............... 16 bits
Sampling Rate ........... 44.1 kHz

01 - Flowers on a Grave
02 - The Kingdom
03 - Bullet Holes
04 - Ghosts in the Machine
05 - Blood River
06 - Quicksand
07 - Send in the Clowns
08 - Undone
09 - Our Time Will Come
10 - Crossroads
11 - Words Are Not Impediments
12 - Falling Away

Die-hard Bush fans often recall Six***** Stone as the group’s conquering work, but now may hear a potential rivalry with the coming of The Kingdom. Bush’s eighth studio album presents as a modern-age merge of early Bush with a harder spin and enduring momentum. The album hits the ground running with the single “Flowers on a Grave” followed by “Bullet Holes,” which was featured in the action film John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. In the least amount of words: The Kingdom is a healthy and dynamic record, leaning toward a heavier sound that is majorly consistent. And Rossdale’s piecemeal, emotive style of songwriting serves the record well, leading with heart and less structure or obligation.

10 - ***** Man
11 - Hope It’s Something Good
12 - Set Me Free

The Chicks, formerly known as Dixie, are back with an explosive new album—their first in 14 years—and with it a reminder to the haters that they are still country music’s resident feminist renegades. Four***** years, a solid album, and a new name later, the Chicks have made it clear that they are still not ready to make nice, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Such Pretty Forks in the Road, her first album in eight years, is less a diatribe than a post-mortem – a one-woman dissection of breakdowns, addiction, insomnia, depression and motherhood. She sings with a profound matter-of-factness while demonstrating the full power of her unmistakeable voice, making for one of her best-ever records.

Biffy Clyro - A Celebration Of Endings (2020) [FLAC]

01 - North of No South
02 - The Champ
03 - Weird Leisure
04 - Tiny Indoor Fireworks
05 - Worst Type of Best Possible
06 - Space
07 - End Of
08 - Instant History
09 - The Pink Limit
10 - Opaque
11 - Cop Syrup

Needless to say, when Biffy Clyro were putting the finishing touches to their eighth album at the start of 2020, they couldn’t have dreamed of the version of the world it’d be released into. A record loosely based around - as the title infers - the idea that the world we once knew has ended, and we’ve moved into a new era of uncertainty, it’s an album that unsurprisingly comes imbued with the sense of creeping darkness we’re now familiar with. “I poke at my eyes just to prove they’re no longer worthless / All I see is black / There’s no brightness coming back” goes the opening refrain of the tremendous ‘North of No South’, giving a swift glimpse into the Scottish trio’s psyche this time around. As Biffy-ish as ever, with its cranked-up guitars and stadium-sized hooks, it’s also a deliciously unusual listen, shifting gears from the dub-flecked ‘Instant History’ to the unhinged scorcher of ‘Cop Syrup’. And while ‘A Celebration of Endings’ does explore the current frustrations felt by the band, both political and personal (“We’re fighting an ugly war / And it’s no good to freak out,” sings Simon Neil on ‘Weird Leisure’) it also offers up a brand of gut-wrenching, defiant hope.
