The new "pirate heaven" IRL
#1
Sounds like just another scam, but some of the shadiest figures is (allegedly) building a pirate's bay in Puerto Rico.

Excerpts:

Five months after Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico is still struggling to rebound.
As an unincorporated territory of the United States, the small island was sidelined when it came to restoration efforts.

A growing group of self-proclaimed “Puertopians” are flocking to Puerto Rico to set up a crypto-paradise.
The island has acted as a tax haven – and playground – for the super-rich for decades, and the new generation of crypto-millionaires is proving to be no exception.

The goal is to build an entirely new city with cryptocurrencies and blockchain tech as the foundation.
The group has even been scouting the island for prospects, searching for a location where they will be able to build an airport and docks.

The project is headed by Brock Pierce...
in 2000, employees and ***** actors alleged that Pierce and his partners, Chad Shackley and Marc Collins-Rector, were running a ***** ***** ring.

The idea is to create an obscene rich people's paradise in a broken place.
And we are the filthy scum of the world for sharing Hollywood's overpaid entertainment stuff.

I'm afraid that our reality is just like that, without the batlant hilights.

What does crypto currency have to do with piracy?

Besides being used by many pirates, not really connected. My point being moral comparison.

While The Pirate Bay ™ file sharing service is deemed as piracy,
people with shady activities are (or were allegedly) creating a safeheaven in a place historically involved with actual piracy on the sea.

The possible use of technology by them, a coincidence, just makes things more intriguing.
But the only matter that matters is evading controls.

More recent news on the subject, should anyone would like to know: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/02/techn...-rico.html

Sounds like not much changed in 5 years; maybe those guys are hyping it and making easy money out of a bubble.

Just keep in mind Puerto Rico is in U.S. jurisdiction.

Lol Yep, USA has 15 different time zones, just on official territories all around the world.
If operations without land acquisition are included, its all time zones out of empty ocean space.

But it's still a mix of "Cayman" and "Bronx". As for Philippines. Nicaragua. Panama. etc?
