[Tut]How to save battery on an android phone
#1
The following steps were done on Android 4.1.2. Depending on your Android version you might have more, less or different options.

Sync:

Disable sync and check your emails manually, or set the email checking interval to once every couple hours/day.
Apps running in background:
Many messaging programs like kik, gtalk and viber run in the background and consume battery. Log out of them if you don’t use them!

Screen brightness:

Reduce it manually. Android had a convenient widget to do this, which somehow disappeared for me with a recent update. But I am sure there are plenty of widgets in Google Play.

Home screen:

Don’t use animated wallpapers and widgets that update or sync in the background. I
only have one slide/page on my home screen, with shortcuts to the apps that I use most often.
Also, a dark wallpaper uses less battery than a bright wallpaper.

GPS:

Who uses that anyway? It does not necessarily use battery while not in use, but I keep it disabled at all times anyway.

Bluetooth:

Disable it, I barely ever need it.

WiFi/Wireless LAN:

It is supposed not to use battery while not connected, but it automatically checks for open networks. I disable it when I don’t need it and I also disabled “Notify me when an open network is available”. You can also disable your WiFi while the screen is off. (Settings -> Wi-Fi -> menu button -> Advanced)
3G/4G/HSPA+/HSDPA+/GPRS/mobile Internet:
Turn it off if you don’t need it. Another very interesting thing you can do is set the “Network mode” to “WCDMA only” in your “Mobile networks” settings. If you are in a city and have 3G coverage everywhere, your phone will still unnecessarily switch between GPRS/3G all the time if 3G reception drops below a certain level. Ever since I disabled it I can finally use 3G in my house without it switching all the time.

Android Update:

Disable the automated update check in “About device” -> “Software update”. Updates are only released once every few months or some phones do not even receive updates, hence it is a waste of battery.
Android Market/Google Play updateBig Grinisable “Auto-update apps” and “Notify me about updates to apps or games that I downloaded”.

Vibration/Sound:

Disable unecessary sounds and vibrations. I use the haptic feedback for the keyboard, but disabled the annoying sound it does each time you hit a key (Settings -> “Language and input” -> tap “Default” -> “Set up input methods”).
Location services:Turn them off! (Settings -> “Location services”).

Screen timeout:

If you have a front camera Android can detect if you are looking at the screen. It requires you to be in the focus of the camera though and if you turn around for one second the screen turns off. That’s why I set the screen timeout to 1 minute and use the screen lock key before I put away my phone.

USB debugging:

Set it to on! Settings -> “Developer options” -> USB debugging. This seems to greatly reduce battery consumption of an INIT process.
Task killerBig Grino not use task killers, even if your RAM is full the apps do not necessarily use battery. If you kill them, the system will restart them over time, which uses battery.

Power saving mode:

This helps a lot. Settings -> “Power saving mode” . I enabled *****U, screen and haptic feedback power saving. Adjusting background color while browsing made the browser too dark for me.

Restart your phone:

Sometimes apps get stuck and a lot of things pile up in the background. Restarting your phone every once in a while (2-5 days) fixes that.

Ads:

As much as ads are needed to allow free apps and websites, some apps really use too many ads (one full screen ad between each level, etc.). I disable my 3G before launching an app with lots of ads, which saves bandwidth and battery. When I am at home and on WiFi I mostly don’t care.

Root:
You can root your phone, underclock *****U and fine tune your whole device in order to save even more battery.
NotificationsBig Grinisable notifications from certain apps, to save battery and nerves. (Settings -> Application manager -> select app -> uncheck “show notifications”)
Battery statistics:
You can look up what apps use a lot of battery, then find an alternative app that consumes less.
