VPN is no guarantee for privcy

I read the other day a TorrentFreak article about more than 600,000 Comcast Internet Service Customer had got warning letter about their downloading copy-righted material.

Since I do use uTorrent downloads occasional movies, I decided to protect myself.
After dong some on-line research, I decided to subscribe to a VPN service.

I came across ProXPN which provided their customers with OpenVPN, which sends and receives encrypted data. I thought I had found the right solution for me.

To my surprised, within 2 days of subscription, I got a warning letter from ProXPN saying that I had downloaded a copy-righted movie with uTorrent demanding that I remove the offending material.

Hello,

We have received a complaint about your account's use of our services that violates the DMCA act (illegal file sharing). We are obligated to follow laws and regulations in this matter and ask for confirmation from you that the offending material has been removed. See infringement detail below..

This means that VPN does not hide you from the DMCA watch dogs and I can only conclude that my personal contact info is stored at ProXPN site and readily available to the DMCA on subpena.

Let's not kid ourselves believing that you can download copy-protected material with impunity if we use a VPN network.

You misunderstand. A VPN does not hide your existence.

You just changed your point of presence on the internet.

You can still be found. In your case, you just had the bad luck to choose a VPN operator that closely adheres to DMCA rules. You just need to find a different VPN service.
