Wii/Homebrew Help
#1
Okay, so I recently successfully Homebrewed a Wii I found and I was able to install a video application for it.

Now I'm trying to play games off of a USB through it which seems a great deal harder to do. I really wish there was one site that just gave me very basic and straightforward directions on how to do this using the most up to date software, but after reading through 50 articles and posts I'm still confused and can't seem to do it.

I have an older Wii with 4.3U.
I've tried installing iOS 56 & 57 in slots 249 & 250.
According to the best directions I can find, it says that the slot will be highlighted in green if successful and to then hit A to do the next slot. When I do that it loads again and I get a line highlighted in red and then the slotts are in red. When I try it again and I just exit after loading and selecting the first slot (249) and THEN load and select slot 250 they both are highlighted green. Is that it? Does the system need to reboot or restart? If I don't hit A again like the instructions say will it not have saved the changes? Thanks for your time.

Further questions:

Do I need some kind of Wad manager?
Does a USB Loader install on my SD card (FAT) or USB?
I have placed video on the USB and it's played fine.
Should be using a beta or final for IOS?

Sorry to be such a pain in the butt. I really tried hard to read up, but every site has a little different info and opinions which is extremely confusing.

That, I don't know.

Remember, I don't have a Wii.

I just answer questions with what is my interpretation of the instructions.

I'll read on it a little more and try my hardest to answer those questions.

No need to be sorry though, we were all beginners one time or another.

If you are just starting to softmod your Wii, just follow the tabs.

In fact you need to follow the instructions by the tabs first. Then read up on the other stuff to expand your Wii.

EDIT: Wait! You were the one who told me what to use to block Wii updates. Why would you ask again?

I read that he is installing IOSs, all of which he named are already installed on my Wii through the guide I used. If by any chance he happened to use the same guide I did (softmod any wii by Mauifrog) then they should already be installed. If not, then he should overwrite his homebrew with that guide.

Anyway the problem you seem to be having lastresort is that either you have an incompatible HDD for usb loading or you are trying to load games with your HDD in the NTFS format rather than FAT32. The preferred way to load games via USB is Fat32 with the games compressed into WBFS rather than .ISO format.

Do I need some kind of Wad manager?

Having a Wad Manager is nice for installing other IOSs, but if you followed a good softmodding guide (via wii hacks.com), then you should have all the necessary IOSs needed to play virtually any game on your wii to date.

Does a USB Loader install on my SD card (FAT) or USB?

This question is somewhat broad. Does the USB Loader itself install to your SD card? Yes and No. If the files are on your SD card you need it to use the USB loader. However, if you move the files to a compatible HDD, then it will load from there instead. Does it install games to your SD card? Only if you tell it to. There are several USB loaders that allow you to choose where you want the game to go. USB Loader GX, I'm unsure, since its not my USB loader of preference.

You should consult the wiihacks.com forum if you haven't already. I softmod wiis for people all the time and that is my site of preference if I encounter any problems. Just be careful not to sound like a pirate when you ask questions there.

The CompleteSoftmodGuide is excellent and comprehensive.

This https://gwht.wikidot.com/ is also excellent, and it's easier to follow for newbies. Just throwing it out there.
