Looking for a way to change client name ? - tops.c - Nov 23, 2018

Hey guys been using utorrent pretty much since the beginning of TPB have tried several others just to go back to my default client, since Spam is not really a issue anymore I would like to get back into to actively sharing from my account my question, is there a way to change my client name from just me ip while I'm actively torrenting ?

I see some clients are named "fake" or something else instead of just the plain ip address. I'm in NE Florida.

Thanks guys hope you guys have a happy holidays Smile

Qbittorrent give you the option of anonymous surfing, and also to forge your IP address.

Vuze gives you the optionof forging your software client - rtorrent 2.2.1 can be used instead of the Vuze 3.2.2 name, for example. uTorrent is a bit more complex as there are means of identifying spoofed versions.  However, Vuze is a beast, and it is often blacklisted since it has addons which can forge data sent to trackers.

Havent seen any FAQs on the matter. But one possible way to spoof a client name would be to get the source code, search and replace with the new name and compile. Easier on linux, or cygwin on Win. Harder on Visual Studio or MingW.

Vuze is best bet, but newer versions are beggarware, and not sure feature is stock, or part of a special mod which may not be easily available anymore.

Not sure why one would want to spoof a client (except if its vuze) , but just avoid using utorrent, usless you can get its 'ID' from a running version.
OK: Here:

Mind you this is for an older Vuze, circa 2014. Dunno how it works on new versions. Dropped vuse when Qbittorrent versions supported tun/tap binding.

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/vuze-extreme-mod.git

They are java programs so hould run on any platform.

If you're going that way, maybe this will help:

https://www.kristenwidman.com/blog/33/how-to-write-a-bittorrent-client-part-1/
https://sourceforge.net/projects/qbittorrent/
There're other client sources around.

You don't want the app name to be displayed on the window title bar and/or in the running processes list? Torrenting in school/office may be a not so good idea.

Also note the name and ID code (handshake) are so easy to fake that developers use other, complex algorithms to detect peers' clients, and so do ISPs and others - Traffic shape, IPs, ports, etc. Changing the name will mask only your app visibility on a 'terminal' level, not in a 'network' level.

To avoid network detection the only real way is with a VPN. When choosing one, check to make sure they allow port forwarding to ensure better torrent connectivity.

Also wise to disable IPV6 and geolocation in browser.

Most clients will minimize to taskbar, and can be made invisible by setting options from the arrow there. So they can be easily hidden in an office setting.
