Market share is the percentage of the total market (or industry) sales made by one firm. It can be reflected as either percentage of sales dollars, percentage of units sold, or percentage of customers. To calculate market share, divide a company’s sales over a certain period by the industry’s total sales during the same period.
Formula: Market Share (%) = (Company’s Sales / Industry’s Total Sales) × 100
Examples:
If a company sells 5,000 units in a year, and the total industry sales are 50,000 units, the company’s market share would be 10% (5,000 / 50,000 × 100).
If a company generates $100 million in revenue, and the total industry revenue is $200 million, the company’s market share would be 50% ($100 million / $200 million × 100).
