TECH NEWS: WinAmp calls it quits! - Duckie - Nov 23, 2013

Although I don't use WinAmp I do use Shoutcast and some of the DSP plugins that are compatible with other software like Sam Broadcaster. I'm wondering how this will affect the broadcasting community.

Thoughts?

More info Here.

I hate to see them go like this.

RIP, Winamp, we won't forget you.

It was a good piece of software... But the bosses are doing their own.

I think I read somewhere that they're discussing things with Microsoft, not entirely sure though since it was a rumor. But I wouldn't count them out just yet.

Wait....

AOL owns WinAmp?
People still USE Winamp?
AOL is still around?!

For serious, I can't believe all of this is around still. And Shoutcast too.
What the small Boobies is going on? Huh

The AOL merged with Ted Turner's Time Warner to make AOL Time Warner at the start of 2000.

Winamp used to be all-free until they announced that they needed money, so they made a paid version alongside the free one.

Winamp stamped its footprint in the Internet world, but now, there's quite a lot of media players that do the same thing Winamp does.

I dont understand. WHICH other players are better than WinAMP?

First off, I still use Winamp, but my main music player is foobar2k.
I've seen people content with using Windows Media Player, so is that a better player?
People who has iPhones or use iTunes obviously use it first.

Visually, I still considering winamp to be one of the better looking media/music players around, but functions have been lacking, especially among the downloadables on winamp.com (alot of plugins dissapeeared around 2006, making that site dead).

I think they killed Winamp because it wasn't a hit on Android (and obviously it didnt exist on Apple's App Store), as the main application have rarely gotten anything but bug fixes for the past 3-4 years.

Since Windows Media Player 12 freezes on my Windows 7 desktop, I had to disable WMP 12, and put Daum Potplayer. Potplayer plays most audio and video files, as well as audio CDs, VCDs, SVCDs, and DVDs (use in conjunction with AnyDVD for outer region discs). If you want to try out Potplayer in English, go to this page: https://www.videohelp.com/download/PotPlayer1.5.40688.EXE . The original webpage only hosts Potplayer in Korean.

Windows Media Player 11 doesn't have the same problem that 12 had on my computer, but I don't install it because it's not a Windows XP program; my mother uses it. When powered by codecs, it runs full speed ahead, and supporting the same thing as Potplayer (although it must be used in conjunction with AnyDVD for foreign DVDs).

VLC does both, but you don't need AnyDVD on it, as long as you have the libdvdcss library file which comes with VLC itself or, when on GNU/Linux, comes supplied the VLC site (www.videolan.org).

Here's another, but I didn't try this: https://www.aimp.ru/ AIMP Player

Using a media player that is aimed at video files to play music is like playing a Audio-CD on a DVD-player. Kinda defeats it's purpose to be honest. I never used the video functions on Winamp because when they introduced it, it was just buggy and winamp kept taking over the files from MPC.

Media Player classic (MPC)with a codec pack, like k-lite, is what I prefer to use to view Video and Disc media. I prefer installing codec packs over using VLC, because that way I'm sure my other software can playback video's aswell (VLC uses it's sets of codecs which aren't shared with other softwares).
