Hi,
I have a lot of TV shows downloaded in AVI format (with codecs which are no longer being widely supported) and I was wondering which piece of software is best to convert multiple files into an MP4 format.

avi and mp4 are containers.
The video and audio inside the containers are compressed using codecs such as xvid, divx, x264.
Upgrading the codecs is not a simple process of changing container, it will require re-encoding (transcoding) of the video and / or audio.
Encoding from one compressed format to another compressed format (xvid to x264 for example) is one of the worst things you can do to video. The quality can only suffer.
The same as with audio conversion.
If it isn't necessary I recommend against it.
