Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 users, read! - RobertX - Feb 23, 2016 The site for the Linux Mint operating system was hacked last Saturday and the hackers replaced the original Linux Mint Cinnamon ISO with an invasive version of the OS. If you downloaded Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon version after Saturday, February 20th, then you will need to kill the OS: a) Format the drive if you already installed on the hard drive b) Format the flash disk if you put it there c) Trash the disc if you burnt it Here's more, from the horse's mouth: Code: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2994 RE: Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 users, read! - dolly_cat - Feb 23, 2016 Huh... I escaped! I downloaded Cinnamon on 13th February Thank God those from Linux Mint managed to figure it out. I wish them good luck! RE: Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 users, read! - RobertX - Feb 23, 2016 I hope they find the bastards responsible and jail them. The authorities shouldn't be wasting time on "pirates" or "freeloaders," these hackers are the true criminals. EDIT: An update: the site is back on, as is the blog. Their forum, however, is still down. And through all this, the author Clem indicated that it's the Cinnamon edition that is the compromised copy of Linux Mint. I think this is my first instance of witnessing a 'virus' in a GNU/Linux OS. Looks like nothing is safe, although I don't think it will happen much so again. There is a parallel here, which is the blind, blanket assumption that Mac's are inherently safe because "all the malware is being written for PC's", so people walk around with a false sense of security. That's dangerous, and false. The same thing occurs with Linux users, but (IMO) it's worse because really unless you are a hard-core linux coder, how would you even know if your linux machine is compromised, and even if you did, what would you do about it? At least my familiarity with Win7 gives me some kind of "edge". I'm familiar enough with the processes, the services, the software, it's performance, the registry, etc... so that if/when something is "off", I can usually tell right away, and I have to options when it comes to fixing it. I run dual boot Win7/Linux Mint and I am more worried about the security of the Linux side than I am the Win7 side. Example has anyone heard of Skype (for Linux) being used as a vector to compromise Linux machines? I haven't. But then, given how little both Linux, and Skype (for Linux) is used, how likely is it that anyone is minding the store. I run Skype 24/7, so a hacker would have all the time in the world to try to run exploits on my machine, and if successful, I would probably never know, and if I DID know, I would have no clue on what to do other than wipe & reinstall. Whole point here being that investing blind faith in the blanket security of anything is dangerous. 30 years ago, being paranoid was a diagnosable mental illness, and now the absence of paranoia is an indicator of stupidity. RE: Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 users, read! - RobertX - Mar 01, 2016 Yeah. Still, I have faith in Clem to fix this, if it hasn't been fixed. I just wonder, what kind of person would do this.
