Torrent multiplex - Same content, multiple meta-files. - dueda - Jun 10, 2018

Ok, torrent redundancy is to be avoided, but it happens. In some situations, I want to seed multiple torrents from the same folder(s).

For example, I got two almost identical releases of GTA V; a week after releasing it, uploader fixed a small text file and added an entire new 60GB torrent.
It is a good thing for whoever will start downloading it, but it could be simpler to offer a patch for the ones already halfway.

For other games I find a torrent followed by a lot of patches. It could be good to offer a "all patches included" kind of torrent, or include a "patches you'll need so far" text file, thus creating a new torrent but keeping the former alive.

And there's the case I find some torrents with the same content; different info/logo files, but the content is exactly the same.

Finally, it would be good to multi-download to the same files too, so I can fix two incomplete torrents - if there're peers with blocks enough to mutually fill the files.

Is this possible? So far my attempt failed.

As a downloader, wishing to seed two different torrents containing mostly the same files?

It's possible. When there are extra files, it's easy, you just point both torrents at the same base folder.

When there are the same files, but different versions, you have to have a copy of each version (with, obviously, different names or with the second copy stored in a sub-folder. Then point both torrents at the same base directory and use the "location" or "renaming" facility in your torrent client to notate the renamed/moved file.

Tixati and uTorrent both have the facilities to do that, other clients almost certainly do too I just don't happen to know from personal experience.

As an uploader, wanting to create a new torrent based on one-or-more existing torrents, you can look for a torrent client which supports https://bittorrent.org/beps/bep_0038.html I think https://koinonein.com/ does. I've never tried it myself, nor have I ever noticed any such torrent "in the wild", and I don't know how widespread support for such torrents is but the theory is there at least.

Thanks for the info, I'll check on that!

Vuze has a feature called "swarm merging". When it detects you are running torrents that have files of the same size, it will attempt to "merge" them so you don't download the same data twice or can use the files from one swarm where it isn't available in another. It doesn't fulfill all of BEP 38 but it is a start.

Thanks Moe, will see that too. Gotta wait next week.
