Downloading without client, without revealing IP
#1
Hi there,

I got ask a simple question I couldn't answer because I never found myself in such a situation, but how would you download a .torrent or magnet link without installing a client, without any seedbox, in a way your personal IP wouldn't be available for malicious users?

there are services/websites online that claim to do this. example:

Well, claiming is one thing, but I doubt this person would like to take the risk to try an insecure service, or worse, a "mole" of big Corp America.

you asked "how would you download a .torrent or magnet link without installing a client, without any seedbox, in a way your personal IP wouldn't be available?" and that is the answer.

if you'd rather purchase a premium VPN, that is a very secure method of anonymity

I believe this would be for occasional use only, hence, no purchase of any premium service. This is good to remind its availability, though.

The answer doesn't prove there won't be a "mole" somewhere in the process, how easy it is to use it, if it's Java or Flash-based, of it only works with Windows... Any details are welcome.

I came here to ask a question. This means I don't have the means to answer it myself. One who never learns from other's mistakes is condemned to remain stupid.

In fact I do find stupid being answered "find your own experience" to "What is your experience" question.

let's break it down into simpler segments, then, to increase the chance of your comprehension.

you want to download a torrent, without actually downloading a torrent. on top of that, the 3rd party service you wish to utilize for doing so can not be a seedbox, and can't reveal your IP to peers in the swarm.

i've told you there are methods for doing this, online 3rd party services that will download a torrent's contents then transfer to you via HTTP or FTP. your concern seems to be that there might be a "mole" somewhere in this "process," and ambiguous as it may sound it is true.

so find one of these torrent-downloading services and try it for yourself. you can't expect others to put themselves in the "danger" you yourself aren't willing to face. one who never learns from their own mistakes is already stupid.

Technically, you don't actually "download" anything from the Internet. Your computer sends requests to other computers and the other computers send your computer whatever was requested. ie. it's impossible to "download" anything without revealing your IP to someone, because someone has to know where to send whatever it is you're "downloading".

That someone may be your ISP, a free or paid proxy or VPN provider, or the provider of the content; any or all of which could be a "mole". You won't ever know unless they are and they choose to reveal themselves. But it is generally accepted that a paid VPN in a country other than the one you reside in is "safe enough" to use for general filesharing.

If you're looking to download ***** ***** or terrorist materials then that's a different matter which nobody here would help you with even if they knew. [Since, you know, you could be a "mole". Wink ]

It could be understood as a temporary seedbox, much like temporary email addresses. The service being able to seed until 1.0 ratio is reached then automatically deleted afterwards would be a big plus as this is definitely not for "freeloading". And no, there is no disgusting stuff such as ***** ***** involved here, just ebooks and the occasional movie. Of course, if that person is comfortable enough with the process, she may well be subscribe to a private VPN. That'd be the next level, and the one I initially suggested to her. But I can't blame people for wanting to be familiar with something first.

I have my own torrent client and it is working pretty well. In itself this can be considered as putting oneself into "danger", as I have been for years now. But I won't take a chance to try an additional service I have personally no use of, just to be able to post about it. In this precise case, if a "danger" is revealed, the victim is pretty much screwed: ending up behind bars or be forced to declare bankruptcy, and consumer-friendly media are here to inform the rest of us. Asking if anybody came across such new information is not too much to ask, I believe. So the very least one can be is skeptical. When only a third-party downloading service knows your IP, that's a lesser risk than having a whole swarm know it.
