Edit Reason: I had an open parenthesis and never closed it. I could sense still being in a parenthetical phrase, so I closed it.

I would rather a subreddit, assuming everyone here is also there.
--Not to share links, only to commiserate the site being down and to still discuss the trax and restoration projects. Like Fanedit.org; all discussion, no links to any of the edits but anyone can DM the editor for a link. Just as a backup, that would work for me.
I went ahead and created this: https://www.reddit.com/r/SuprRiffBay/
As far as I understand anyone can join and post. I guess I am the Admin, but anybody else who wants to do it, just say the word. It's literally just a place we can go to say "Dammit! SuprBay is still down. I wanted to see that new restoration of MST3K. DM me if you can help" That sort of thing. I never created a subreddit before and am not all that active on reddit, but this seems like the simplest way to reconnect when this isn't here.

Discord seems like the obvious choice to me. Both the comic pirates and doctor who pirates have switched to those. And it's quite convenient to get their notifications in your own discord server too.
As many of y'all know I run a few servers already (and mod for a few more), including some that are clearly relevant.
And there is already a damn good Satellite of Love discord server.
If anyone wants any info about these servers, how to join them, how to start your own, etc - please feel free to reach out to me any time.

I don't "get" discord. Someone tried to explain it to me and it sounded pretty much like reddit or this message board, except you have to download it. I got on briefly. It starts and connects to the internet on its own, separate from the browser. It seems needlessly complicated to achieve the same purpose as a basic message board. No one yet has explained how Discord differs and especially how it is better than something like a subreddit. (Maybe I am too old? I feel too old.)
*edit-- We have 23 people on the subreddit so far
**edit-- I hope I don't sound argumentative or overly defensive of reddit--a site I couldn't care less about. If people would rather download discord and do that, it is ok by me. Just trying to help :-)

Discord is a mess and I want nothing to do with it, frankly. It's a big ugly, un-optimized chat web-app loaded up with more cheezy GIFS than an old MySpace page. It's a resource hog that's ugly and hard to navigate. I genuinely don't understand why it's popular so I chock it up to me just being old.
Also frankly, I'm well aware my stance won't change anyone's mind either way and you're all gonna do it anyway... just be aware that a significant chunk of users simply won't follow you to Discord. Ever.

This was kinda how I felt. Why don't we all meet on a beach in Second Life! That's probably still a thing.

THANK YOU!! I've had this exact same discussion with much *****er coworkers. They love it- for every damn thing. I can't find anything in it. It has no coherent search ability that I can discern. It's chaotic, hard to read, impossible to follow. Visually, it's the electronic equivalent- to a ransom note assembled from foreign language magazine cutouts done with a sharpened spoon handle.

lmao
the extra benefits are countless things like watch parties, various message notifications, attentive moderators, games and so so very much more.
maybe the server you joined was a mess? every server is different. Yes, there are some similarities to forums. but there's also much more real-time involvement.
think of it as ICQ or AIM with bulletin bulettin boards. and much more. plus you dont have to worry about it "going down" etc.
most servers have several "rooms" or "channels" like.... one to share pictures, one to share memes , one to share self promos, one to share links to movies.... you get the idea
its very very intuitive, once you actually give it a shot
plus voice chat etc!!!

idk what could possibly be confusing about these very obviously labeled channels

Watch parties -- no thank you
Various message notifications -- how on Earth is that a benefit? If I have a message here or on reddit there is a little number next to "messages". Why would I want "various" notifications?
Attentive moderators -- I feel like before you typed this one, you knew you were running out already.
Games -- no thank you
It's like AIM or ICQ with bulletin boards -- So is this or reddit, in the sense that we can private message each other any time.
Voice Chat -- no, but also why? Maybe I am anti-social, but I never visited here and wished I could hear people's voices.
Is it that ***** people forgot we used to have lame chatrooms and they've added video games and think it's new? Because it sounds a lot like old chatrooms with voice enabled, and a terrible user interface.

I'm in the camp that doesn't believe any of this is necessary, but I'd rather bookmark a subreddit than join a discord server. It's also pretty easy to find subreddits, and view them without an account... unlike discord. Nevermind how you're supposed to message someone for an invite via a forum that's gone offline. Great backup strategy.
