'The movie itself is bad, but not in a charmingly bad way like Santa Claus, SC Conquers the Martians, or even The Christmas That Almost Wasn't. It's just boring-bad."
There is a lot of that among the newer RiffTrax, in my opinion, as well. It makes me wonder if the wellspring of bad but *sincere* movies has about run dry. So many of the recent movies are direct-to-dumpster crap cranked out, not to make a buck by entertaining horny ***** at a drive-in, but to squeeze pennies out of streaming services before the viewer shuts the unwatchable crap off. It's a very different kind of bad movie.

I think there's still plenty of decent material out there (and coming out regularly), but Rifftrax is doing a decent job of spreading things out. They release either a movie or short every single week (sometimes both). So some weeks end up being more of a miss, while others are still pretty decent. I imagine some of the more modern crap (which I don't really even enjoy as a Rifftrax) was simply too cheap to turn down for them. It also gives them cheap content to throw on their Friends subscription down the line to bolster that selection.
You figure, best case scenario, a new season of MST gets us 13 good movies to riff (and let's face it, with modern MST, we're lucky if 8 of the 13 are really good). I figure Rifftrax is still hitting that mark really well, plus a number of movies that aren't as good, but still okay enough, and a handful that are just garbage (and not in a good way).
So, yeah, week to week, there are some stinkers, but over the course of each year, I think they're still going strong. I would like to see them get back to 2-3 live events each year, though. I rewatch those shows more than anything else because the vibe of them is just so much more lively. Plus, they usually do well picking solid movies/shorts for them.

I was always pissed about Netflix not keeping the show going but when they posted the streaming stats for every show they released it became pretty clear why they didnt move forward. I think season 11 only had like 1.5 million hours or something and season 12 was half of that. I know Kickstarter rewards took care of most of the people who cared the most about the show but still, those numbers are horrible coming off of the the second biggest kickstarter ever or whatever it was

Season 12 had half as many episodes as 11. So I'm not surprised the hours viewed were half as much.
Even with relatively low view numbers, Netflix should have been able to keep the show running, but I get the impression that Joel just wanted too much of a budget for them to justify it.

And the shame of it is, it was needless. They didn't need Jim Henson puppeteers, the Gizmoplex, a live band, and all of that nonsense. (Although I'll grant you, the first reboot-season's theater tunnel was freaking amazing. I assume it's some bullshit copyright or licensing thing that kept them from ever using it again. I can't imagine anyone choosing not to use that anymore. But I digress...)
It's almost like Joel never really got what made the show a success in the first place. Or maybe he forgot.
Or maybe there were factors at work that we know nothing about, which would make it all make perfect sense if we knew, but we don't.
It's okay. We'll always have seasons K-10.
