Actually, if I remember correctly, the speed of recordings (EP, LP & SP) didn't rely on the tab. It relied on the mode you selected on your VHS recorder. EP being the lowest quality, but you could record up to 6hrs. SP is the highest quality (short of having a SVHS recorder), but you could only tape 2hrs. LP was in the middle, and could be taped for 4hrs. As for the tab, it was just for recording protection (if present, you could record on it—broken off, no recording).
Another trick was that if you had a SVHS recorder, you could drill a hole in a blank tape to make the recorder think it was a SVHS tape which were more expensive (I did it quite often back in the day) ;-)
