'The Mads' Are Back!

In my opinion I wouldn't say there's any "phoning it in" with Mike, Kevin, and Bill, but I do get how after so many movie riffs that it can seem that way.  Trace and Frank definitely have that fun casualness (is that a word?) which makes their riffs fun.  For me, if you're really looking for laid back, not-so-scripted riffs, make sure you watch Bridget and Mary Jo movies.  Their riffs almost seem like they have a problem actually sticking to the script and have a ton of fun.  My wife really enjoys them for that specific reason.  I've grown to love their stuff over the past few years.

I for one disagree. Mike, Bill and Kevin still got that whole riffing awesome thing going on after many years.

I appreciate the referral, Torgo! Just downloaded Earth Angel (1991) and am excited to see how Bridge and Mary Jo riff on it!

I never feel that Nelson and Co. are phoning it in. If I have any minor complaint with their riffs, it's that they've evolved into an angry "we HATE this movie!" attitude as their default approach.

Back in the MST3K days, you had the premise that someone was forcing the characters involved to watch the movies. With no story connected to Rifftrax, though, and the riffers just "being themselves", the conceit that they're not happy to be there seems, if anything, a little whiny. They aren't being forced to watch the movies. They're making a pretty decent living doing it, and are considered the kings of the riffing genre. Just a BIT more of a sense of fun would be nice. Still, they're very good at what they do.

I get the love of The Mads, though. They do feel more off the cuff, and they do tend to riff the actual story onscreen. Not nearly as much of the "look at how long this establishing shot it taking" type of grumbling.

Big thanks for posting these. Something odd; I'm watching A Night Of Shorts 2 (w/ guest Mary Jo Pehl) and it seems like Mary Jo was introduced as a guest at the beginning, then doesn't appear in any of the riffs. Wondering if anyone knows what happened here. Technical glitch? Did MJ bounce after being hurt by Trace's comment?

Almost sounds like Trace and Frank were reading MJ's lines in her absence.

The Mads have people on as guests, not as guest riffers. They're usually friends who appreciate the opportunity to add a little flavour and they talk after the riff is done. You can tell how close these three are by the relatively large amount of time spent after the riff just chatting. Any insults were insult-comedy.

Got my ticket for the next one.
