subtitle files for media players to fix yify stuff
#1
i got https://thepiratebay.se/torrent/9249428/...264_-_YIFY buy yify didnt include any subs ! nothing is more annoying that sitting down to watch a film only to find you cant understand wtf is being said ! that film needs subs becuase spanish in it from start

but i read comment under yify's release and 1 is link to https://subscene.com/subtitles/elysium/english/824254 they come as rar file so i unrar then drag to films folder and they work in vlc player..now do .srt subs work on media players eg Asus o Play because i prefer to watch on big hdtv ?

if not what type of sub file do we need so that media player can detect and use them ? once i try these subs ill let you know if they work on my media player but im sure in past .srt subs havent worked on media player i use

thanks for any help

hi bob

well i just tried and got no subs message when i tried to get them to work, (elysium movie) so i set up laptop by my hdtv and whenever spanish was spoken i looked at my laptop for the subs ! ( i put copy of film on laptop as well as hard drive i attached to media player)

if you have the copy of the film i mentioned and the sub file try it yourself and let me know if you can get them to play..and if you do tell me what you did please, i clicked options on asus remote control then subs and thats when no subs message shows on tv even though i put the srt file in same folder as movie. ( thats what i normally do to activate subs if i need them for a movie)

.srt files are typically companions to .avi files (since, unlike mp4, the avi container doesn't natively support soft subtitles), so it may be that the player is expecting any subtitles for an .mp4 video to be contained within the .mp4 itself.

You could maximise your chances of success by ensuring the two files are named identically, eg. Elysium.2013.1080p.BluRay.x264.YIFY.mp4 and Elysium.2013.1080p.BluRay.x264.YIFY.srt, and located in the same folder.

If that doesn't work, you will have to re-mux the subtitles into the .mp4 But I'll leave further details to bob5695 who knows more than I do.

double-check the name of the files.
as nik said, the name has to be exactly the same.

ok thanks @nik and @bob ill try that, ps its a good scifi film if youve not seen it and that yify version is very good

i notices subs i got were saying 720p in them not 1080p so ive changed that so they now say Elysium.2013.1080p.BluRay.x264.YIFY.srt, not Elysium.2013.720p.BluRay.x264.YIFY.srt, once ive tried that ill come back to let you know if that solves it

for now thanks for advice : )

yeah, depending on the firmware you're running, the device will work in one of two ways:

#1 - it let's you manually select the subs, regardless of their name, but the downside is that if you have more than 1 video file in the same folder (each 1 with their own subs), it automatically plays the same subs for all videos files and you have to manually change to the correct subs.

#2 - if you have more than 1 video file in the same folder (each 1 with their own subs), it always selects the right subs automatically (based on file name, which has to match the video file name), but the downside is that it doesn't allow you to manually select the subs.

i like #2 the best, and it's the one i run on my asus.
sounds like it's the one you're running, as well.

ok ive got about 6 films in 1 folder(nmaed something like films 2 watch) but then each film is in its own yellow folder if you know what i mean as stuff often comes with a film and subs seperatly and then a .nfo file etc

, i just tried it with the renamed .srt subs and i still get the no subtitles notification when using my asus o play hd2 remote control to try and get the subs to play , so if possible could any of you get the same copy of the film i named in post1 and the same subs, rename them as i did and let me know if your asus media player will play them...i know ive had trouble before with .srt subs using my asus, like i said if that happens i can always watch the film on a pc or laptop and vlc player will play the subs..its just i prefer watching on big tv !

the nun in elysium talks in spanish within the first couple of minutes of the film starting so we need subs right away

thanks

then it counts as "1 video file per folder", not as "more than 1 video file per folder".

i already have a copy of elysium, i'm not gonna download another copy.
and by the way, my asus o!play is the "mini", not the "hd2". (not that it matters much)
please make sure that you COPY the name of the video file onto the subs file,
don't just delete where it says 720p and type 1080p, or vice-versa.

it might be that the subs have a non-kosher charset.
open them in your notepad and save them as ansi, in case they are in unicode or utf8.
it's worth trying. i always use ansi, and they always work.

I know atleast with Media Player Classic, you can drag n drop the subtitle into the video window. If you dont do it often that solution should be ok
