Paul Weller - On Sunset (Deluxe) (2020) [FLAC]

On Sunset finds Paul Weller returning to Polydor Records, the label both the Jam and Style Council called home back in the 1980s. Polydor and Weller parted ways after he delivered Modernism: A New Decade in 1989, an excursion into house music that the label deemed too uncommercial at the time. Ironically, On Sunset finds Weller picking up some of the threads left hanging by Modernism, not by reviving the big beat of house music but rather delving deep into soul-rock that looks forward and backward in equal measure. Reuniting with Jan Kybert -- the collaborator who co-wrote and co-produced 2015's Saturns Pattern but largely sat out its 2017 sequel, A Kind Revolution, and didn't appear at all on 2018's True Meanings -- Weller pushes himself into new textural territory, adhering to his love of soul, '60s rock, and folk yet assembling the parts in unpredictable fashions. All this is apparent from the moment the cool electronic groove underpinning the opening "Mirror Ball" starts fracturing into space, losing its rhythm and melody as it enters the stratosphere. A few other songs perform a similar trick -- particularly those like "More," which seem to stretch out across the horizon -- but that fluid sensibility enlivens the leaner tracks, most of which arrive on the second half of the album. As the songs grow tighter, Weller indulges in a few familiar obsessions -- pastoral folk vies with psych-pop in the tradition of Steve Marriott -- but everything is cloaked in a glassy, reflective sheen, one that can sound progressive or electronic or traditional depending on perspective. The ever-changing sound exists largely on the surface, not the songs themselves, as they're sturdy, winning tunes that find Weller in an appealing troubadour mode. What's different about On Sunset is that expansive hybrid of electronic and R&B, a fusion colored by just enough experimentation and craft to make the album feel fresh and distinctly belonging to Weller.

06 - Florida
07 - Kansas
08 - We Don’t Smoke it No More
09 - White Line

Neil ***** puts it best: “This album is the unheard bridge between Harvest and Comes a Time”. Recorded between June 1974 and January 1975, Homegrown was intended to come out in 1975 before Neil cancelled the release. The album has remained unreleased until now, achieving a legendary status among Neil ***** fans in the process. The album is made up of twelve Neil ***** songs, of which seven are previously unreleased - “Separate Ways,” “Try,” “Mexico,” “Kansas,” We Don’t Smoke It No More,” “Vacancy” and “Florida” (a spoken word narration). Also included are the first recordings of “Love Is A Rose,” “Homegrown,” “White Line, “Little Wing,” and “Star Of Bethlehem” – different versions of which would all later appear on other Neil ***** albums. Neil plays solo on some tracks (guitar, piano and harmonica), and is joined by a band of friends on other tracks, including Levon Helm, Ben Keith, Karl T Himmel, Tim Drummond, Emmylou Harris and Robbie Robertson. Recorded in analog, and mastered from the original master tapes, this long-lost album is a wonderful addition to Neil’s incomparable catalog.

Cloud Nothings - The Black Hole Understands (2020) [FLAC]

01 - Story That I Live
02 - The Sound of Everyone
03 - An Average World
04 - A Weird Interaction
05 - Tall Gray Structure
06 - A Silent Reaction
07 - The Mess Is Permanent
08 - Right on the Edge
09 - Memory of Regret
10 - The Black Hole Understands

When it sunk in that there might not be any live shows happening for the foreseeable future, the members of Cloud Nothings began work on what would become The Black Hole Understands. About a month into quarantine, Dylan Baldi and Jayson Gerycz started sending files back and forth, with guitars, bass, and vocals for the new songs being tracked in Philly while drums and mixing happened in Cleveland. This kind of remote recording process isn't out of the ordinary for some bands but it presented a new set of restrictions for Cloud Nothings, completely removing the element of interactive jamming and tightening the production around a set of streamlined summer pop songs. Since the start, every record has had its own vibe, but these songs take a sharp turn away from the noisy thrash and improv tendencies that have shown up on recent albums. The vocals are far more delicate and dreamy, floating along on fast, jangly songs. With clean hooks and uncluttered arrangements (a synth overdub from Bee Mask's Chris Madak is the album's only guest feature), the songs are the kind of concise, hook-heavy blasts the band was churning out in their earliest days, only a little more distant and weary. The Black Hole Understands isn't mellow by any means, but it shows a restraint that very much fits with the strange times that it was born of. The Black Hole Understands is hyper-melodic and high-energy but carries a sense of melancholy and cautious optimism that mirrors the restless dread of life on lockdown.

The Rentals - Q36 (2020) [24.96 FLAC]

11 - Spaceships
12 - Goodbye, Steve
13 - Invasion Night
14 - Another World
15 - Machine Love
16 - Elon Musk Is Making Me Sad

The Rentals' lineup is now Matt Sharp with Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner and The Killers drummer Ronnie Vanucci, and they made this album with frequent Flaming Lips collaborator Dave Fridmann as mixing engineer and guest vocal contributions from The Gentle Assassins Choir, School of Seven Bells' Alejandra Deheza, and others. Together, the 16 songs of Q36 make something that genuinely earns the term "epic." It's by far the most ambitious music that Matt Sharp has ever released, and he pulls it off. The Rentals' first reunion album proved they could still churn out quality versions of the music they made in the '90s, but I don't know who could've predicted Matt would return six years later with a star-studded lineup and an album that is both literally and figuratively out of this world. This is the kind of album that music nerds dream up when they're shooting the breeze about hypothetical supergroups and album concepts that will never exist. But I promise you're not dreaming, Q36 really does exist, and it's as great as it sounds like it'd be.

05 - The Summoning
06 - Cloud City
07 - Folding
08 - Shapeshifter

The inscrutable shoegaze legends return with a towering reunion album, their first in 22 years. Unexpectedly, it is their most emotionally accessible music yet. Often times, a reunion album reminds you why you fell in love with a band in the first place, proves they've still got it, and helps re-establish the band as a force within an era that they had long been absent from. But in rarer cases, a reunion album cements a band's legacy further than ever before, closing a book you might not have realized had been left open. Inlet, Hum's first album in 22 years, is the latter.

Roots Remain is the most comprehensive compilation of Charlie Daniels recordings ever assembled and it misses very few important tracks, making it the one definitive retrospective.
